Preparing Your Body for Oral Surgery: A Collaborative Approach to Healing

Oral surgery is about more than what happens in the dental chair.

Whether you are preparing for a dental implant, full-arch reconstruction, advanced extraction, bone regeneration, or another surgical procedure, your body’s ability to heal can be influenced by your nutritional status, immune function, inflammation, circulation, metabolic health, and overall readiness for surgery.

At Reclaim Integrative Dentistry & Implant Center, we believe the mouth should be treated as part of the whole body. That’s why we are proud to partner with ViveWell Health to provide patients with an additional layer of support before, during and after surgery.

ViveWell’s Advanced Surgical Support program is designed around the concept of optimizing health before a procedure and supporting the body’s repair processes afterward. Their program can include personalized nutrition, laboratory testing, infusion therapy, and regenerative therapies based on each patient’s needs.

Why Prepare Your Body Before Oral Surgery?

Surgery creates a controlled injury that requires your body to respond. After any surgery, your body must coordinate inflammation, immune activity, blood flow, tissue repair, collagen production, and new bone or soft-tissue formation.

The goal isn’t simply to “get through” surgery. Ideally, we want to put your body in the best position possible to respond appropriately and recover efficiently.

This is especially important for patients undergoing complex procedures such as full-arch implant reconstruction, extractions with bone grafting, cavitation surgery, or other regenerative procedures.

1. Focus on Nutrition

Your body needs adequate protein, vitamins, minerals, hydration, and calories to repair tissue.

Before surgery, your healthcare team may evaluate your nutritional status and identify potential deficiencies. ViveWell’s Surgical Support Program incorporates nutrition and optimization labs as part of its approach. Their referral program currently describes Advanced Surgical Support as including optimization labs, three weeks of infusion therapy, and nutrition support, with a Premium Surgical Support option extending to six weeks.

At home, patients can also focus on fundamentals:

  • Eat adequate protein and nutrient-dense whole foods.
  • Stay well hydrated.
  • Minimize alcohol and highly processed foods.
  • Prioritize quality sleep.
  • Follow your surgical team’s medication and supplement instructions.
  • Avoid starting new supplements without discussing them with your providers.

2. Support Your Immune System and Cellular Health

Healing requires energy at the cellular level. Your immune system must respond to the surgical site while your tissues begin rebuilding.

Depending on your individual health history and goals, ViveWell may utilize therapies designed to support circulation, antioxidant defenses, inflammation regulation, and cellular function.

IV Infusion Therapy

IV therapy can deliver fluids, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients directly into the bloodstream. ViveWell offers customized IV infusion services as part of its broader approach to nutrition and surgical recovery.

For the right patient, infusion therapy may be incorporated into a pre-, during surgery, or post-surgical plan to address identified nutritional or physiologic needs.

Ozone Therapy

ViveWell also offers ozone-based therapies, including major autohemotherapy, UV-enhanced ozone, Prolozone, and EBOO. Their approach uses these therapies with the goal of supporting circulation, antioxidant pathways, oxygen utilization, and inflammatory balance.

Ozone therapy is not appropriate for everyone, and treatment should be individualized by a qualified medical provider.

3. Regenerative Therapies

Regenerative medicine focuses on supporting the body’s own repair processes. Depending on the patient and the clinical situation, we can implement our own adjacent therapies in tandem with ViveWell’s surgical support offerings.

PRP

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) uses components of a patient’s own blood that contain growth factors. We combine the PRP with bone grafting often during an extraction for the most optimal healing.

Peptide Therapy

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that can act as signaling molecules in the body. We offers peptide therapy as part of its regenerative and optimization services, with certain peptides intended to support processes such as mitochondrial function and healing.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem-cell-based therapies are another component of our regenerative medicine offerings. The goal is to support tissue repair and regeneration, although the appropriate application depends heavily on the individual patient and treatment indication.

Exosome Therapy

Exosomes are microscopic extracellular vesicles involved in cell-to-cell communication. Exosome therapy uses signaling molecules associated with stem cells to support healing responses and tissue regeneration.

These therapies are areas of rapidly evolving research, and some regenerative treatments are not FDA-approved for every condition or use. Patients should discuss potential benefits, limitations, risks, and regulatory status with their medical provider before treatment. ViveWell specifically notes that some therapies it offers are not FDA-approved and that treatment outcomes vary.

4. Address Toxic Exposures When Appropriate

For some patients, preparation may also involve evaluating environmental exposures or toxic metal burden.

ViveWell offers toxic-metal screening and chelation therapy. Chelation involves medications that bind certain metals so they can be eliminated from the body. ViveWell’s approach includes evaluating exposure history and laboratory testing before developing an individualized protocol.

Chelation is a medical treatment and is not something every surgical patient needs. It should only be considered when clinically appropriate and under medical supervision.

For patients with relevant exposure histories, this type of evaluation can be another piece of a comprehensive health assessment before undergoing a major procedure.

5. Consider the Whole Recovery—not Just Surgery Day

One of the most important concepts we share with our patients is that healing doesn’t end when surgery is complete.

At Reclaim, our focus is on creating the healthiest possible environment for oral healing. That may include advanced surgical techniques, biologically compatible materials, PRF, bone grafting, ozone, laser therapy, nutritional considerations, and individualized post-operative care.

ViveWell provides an additional medical layer by looking beyond the mouth and evaluating factors that may influence whole-body recovery.

Together, our goal is to create a coordinated approach:

Assess → Optimize → Operate → Regenerate → Recover

This collaboration can be particularly valuable for patients undergoing complex or extensive procedures who want a more comprehensive approach to surgical preparation and recovery.

What Can You Do at Home?

You don’t necessarily need an extensive treatment program to begin preparing your body.

Start with the basics:

  • Prioritize sleep. Your body performs much of its repair work while you rest.
  • Eat for healing. Focus on protein, colorful vegetables and fruits, healthy fats, and nutrient-dense foods.
  • Hydrate. Adequate fluid intake supports normal physiologic function and recovery.
  • Reduce inflammatory lifestyle factors. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, and minimize highly processed foods.
  • Manage stress. Chronic stress can affect sleep, immune function, and overall well-being.
  • Follow your surgical instructions. Your surgical team should guide you regarding medications, supplements, fasting, exercise, and anything else that needs to be modified before your procedure.
  • Ask questions early. Don’t wait until the week of surgery to address nutritional deficiencies, medical conditions, medications, or concerns about recovery.

Your Mouth Is Part of Your Body

At Reclaim Integrative Dentistry & Implant Center and ViveWell Health, we believe surgery should be viewed through a whole-person lens.

The procedure itself matters—but so does the environment in which healing occurs.

Preparing your body before surgery, supporting it during recovery, and addressing individual nutritional, metabolic, inflammatory, and regenerative needs may help create a more comprehensive path toward healing.

If you’re preparing for oral surgery, ask your Reclaim treatment team whether ViveWell’s Surgical Support Program may be appropriate for you. ViveWell’s team works directly with healthcare providers to develop individualized surgical-support plans, creating a collaborative bridge between oral surgery and whole-body health.
